Angereichertes Uran im Krisengebiet: URENCO beliefert die Ukraine mit Brennstoff für AKWs

Trotz der anhaltenden, zum Teil bewaffneten Konflikte, wird der Uran-Konzern URENCO künftig die Ukraine mit dem erforderlichen angereicherten Brennstoff für den Einsatz in den dortigen Atommeilern beliefern. URENCO ist im Besitz der Niederlande und Großbritannien sowie der deutschen Konzerne E.on und RWE. Das Unternehmen betreibt Anreicherungsanlagen u.a. im westfälischen Gronau. Deren Betrieb ist vom Atomausstieg ausgenommen und ohne jede Befristung. Ein entsprechender Liefervertrag ist im Beisein der britischen Botschafterin zwischen URENCOs CEO Thomas Haeberle und dem Präsidenten Yuriy Nedashkovskyider von der ukrainischen Energoatom in Kiew unterzeichnet worden. Angaben zum finanziellen Umfang des neuen Liefervertrages wurden offenbar nicht gemacht. Die Fertigung der Brennelemente für die ukrainischen Atommeiler erfolgt bei Westinghouse im schwedischen Västeras.

Die “National Nuclear Energy Generating Company “Energoatom”” der Ukraine ist ein staatliches Unternehmen und für den Betrieb aller laufenden AKWs zuständig. An vier Standorten werden insgesamt 15 AKW-Blöcke betrieben. Meldungen über diesen Deal verbreiten Word-Nuclear News, die Energoatom und Ukrain-Today.

Bis 2015 wurden sämtliche AKWs der Ukraine mit Brennstoff aus Russland versorgt. Seit den kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen im Osten der Ukraine und nach der Besetzung der Krim durch Russland hat die Ukraine Verhandlungen mit westlichen Unternehmen über Uranlieferungen aufgenommen. Bereits im Juni 2016 sollen Uran-Brennelemente von Westinghouse im Block 5 des AKW Zaporizhia eingesetzt worden sein, berichtete Ukraine-Today vor einiger Zeit. Außerdem soll im März 2015 im AKW Yuzhnoukrainsk Block 3 “TVS-WR” Brennstoff von Westinghouse eingesetzt worden sein.

URENCO and Energoatom sign contract on supply of enriched uranium

Ukraine’s national nuclear energy generating company Energoatom and the Anglo- German-Dutch company URENCO have signed a contract on supply of the enriched uranium for Ukraine.

URENCO’s CEO Mr Thomas Haeberle and Energoatom’s President Mr Yuriy Nedashkovskyi signed the contract at a ceremony in Kyiv.  Present at the event was also the British Ambassador to Ukraine Ms Judith Gough.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Thomas Haeberle, CEO/URENCO, said: “In 2016, URENCO was invited to submit an offer for supply of Enriched Uranium as part of Energoatom’s competitive procurement exercise. URENCO is pleased that Energoatom is once again part of its global portfolio of customers and looks forward to making deliveries under the new contract in due course.”

Underlining the steps that Energoatom is consistently taking to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security, its president Yuriy Nedashkovskyi said: “The contract signed today will allow us to cooperate, on a mutually beneficial basis, with one of the world leaders in production and supply of the nuclear materials – URENCO. The enriched uranium which the company will provide will be used to produce nuclear fuel at a facility of Westinghouse Company in Sweden for the purposes of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. This contract is another consistent step by Energoatom to diversify nuclear materials and fuel supply to meet the needs of Ukrainian NPPs.”

Welcoming the signature, Judith Gough, British Ambassador to Ukraine, said: “The UK welcomes steps by Ukrainian authorities to strengthen the country’s energy security and diversity its energy supplies. The British government will continue to work with URENCO and Energoatom in the area of nuclear energy to achieve that aim.”
